Last week Jaz had her opening at Paige Blackie and it was really good. A solo exhibition of photographic portraits in a mix of glass plates and large digital prints. I felt really proud of her and the work she presented. It was a really strong and cohesive body of work and i think worked well in the space.
I found it really inspiring, it was like beautifully confronting coming into a very white space both literally and physically and seeing these blown up brown faces occupying every single wall was pretty great. I didn't stay for the speeches because I hate crowds so I did a couple laps of the room then headed out. I heard though that Jaz and her mother said a few words and that it was really powerful, little bit gutted i missed that.
the next day we had our class session down at Paige Blackie and offered Jaz a group critique ahead of our hui coming up. Because she is currently on a residency in Dunedin it made sense for her to have a crit during the opening of her show. Then in the afternoon we had a masterclass with Simon on site. To start us off he got us to go around and talk about how site is relevant to each of us and if we do or don't consider it. initially site hadn't really been something i considered in my making, but after listening to others responses and then Simons presentation, site is consistently present in my work. making in the workshop, presenting in a studio space or gallery my body and my movements in relation to the work at hand, all these things become part of my work.
